Notes of a Raindrop

"Notes of a Raindrop" is a story about a single raindrop's journey, that holds methaphorical layers about a single person's life, transformation of soul, evolution of life. From it's birth to it's mystical end, the 7 chapter story is told through collages made of pre-50's American science education books, 3 dimensional assamblages that use both similar era science equipment and marble, brass, ceramics. The exhibition has ended, however story now lives in a new medium a book. It is accompanied with a sound album composed by Arad Musosoğlu & Yusuf Hacıalioğlu, that can be reached via the QR code inside the book.

I: Genesis

The drop first had to be born, yet this birth needed to be a part of a vast cycle—it had to be continuously born. For a moving raindrop, this is entirely natural. The psychoanalytic idea of rebirth, in which the human being comes into existence anew as someone different with each transformation, along with other ideas—such as Plato’s Timaeus and the concept of Khôra, through which the universe exists in a state of continual becoming, much like quantum fields—all support this notion of perpetual birth. II: Deep Harmonics

The raindrop falls into the ocean and discovers other beings, floating in it's newborn state. It is getting to know it's neighbors, without being able to identify strict boundaries, almost like a baby discovering the world. Sea creatures reproduce, fight, give and take parts from each other. The texts and images are cut from the book "Animals of the Seashore" by Bertha Morris Parker.

III: Lands

After setting ashore, the raindrop arrives to the land. Travelling through fossils, corals, caves, rivers, mountains, volcanoes, it grows, spends time. Makes a friend perhaps, a rock. They write letters to each other. Images and texts cut from this chapter are from "Stories Read from Rocks" by Bertha Morris Parker.

IV: Discoveries

The civilization is born after the great explosion. The raindrop discovers what is science. Takes a "Cosmic Field Trip". Learns to gather and analyze information, use scientific equipment. Writes Haikus using specifically designed abacuses. However the findings lead to the absurd and the dangerous. The images and texts on this chapter are cut from the book "Scientist and His Tools" by Bertha Morris Parker.

V: Dissonance Pt.1: Disasters & Migration

Dissonance is the lack of harmony between two frequencies. Unlike resonance, it creates an uncanny tension. After scientific discoveries and age of enlightment, the raindrop finds itself in facing one disaster following the other. With it's habitat unlivable due to tornadoes, blizzards, lightningfrost, the drop flees with migrating birds. All the scientific discoveries are meaningless measuring disasters, and the human experience which can not be reduced to numbers.

V: Dissonance Pt.2 : Dark Clouds

During dark times, the raindrops wholeness melts away within all that is going around. It's migration leads to a smoky city, where the clouds cover the sky. The reports by the weather bureau aren't hopeful, however a little girl skipping in a puddle of rain seeing her own reflection, Groundhog the Weather Prophet's words, and a rainbow in the night bring a confusing mystery.

VI: Remembrance

Remembrance works as the only method out of despair. It brings back the sense of wholeness, shows where to look at through dark times. In this chapter we join Mary & John, two children looking for a rainbow, climbing up. After the raindrop seeing itself through a water mirror, it remembers where it came from, the clouds.

VII: Coda

After the raindrop's transformation is complete, and the story is told, we are face to face with a few questions - or riddles one might call it. Just as at the end of every science textbook, there are questions for children, here are a few for you.
